چکیده

The production of carbon fiber reinforced polymers, which are widely used both in civil and military applications, is an elaborate process un-free from faults and problems. Problems during the manufacturing, such as plies’ overlapping, can cause flaws in the resulting material, this way compromising its integrity. Compared with metallic materials, carbon epoxy composites show a number of advantages: Higher tensile strength, lower density and coefficient of thermal expansion, absence of fatigue state related phenomena, possible manufacturing of large layered structures. Within this framework, this work aims to propose a design of ferrite core probe for eddy current non destructive evaluation, in order to investigate the presence of defects in carbon fiber epoxy composite materials. The effect of the ferrite core is analyzed in order to focus magnetic flux density on the investigated specimen. Eddy currents generated by high speed ferrite core probe movement were investigated by using numerical simulation. Particularly, a Finite Element Approach has been exploited in order to characterize the transducer to specially emphasize the presence of defects in a multi-layer carbon fiber epoxy structure.

Quantitative measuring of pearlite in carbon steels using electromagnetic sensor

Non-destructive Eddy current (EC) technique has long been used to detect discontinuities in materials. Recently, its application has been extended to characterize materials microstructure. In order to identify different microstructures, four plain carbon steel bars with different chemical compositions (AISI 1015, 1035, 1045 and 1080) were used in annealed condition. The pearlite percentage, car...

Compu1er Modeling of Pulsed Eddy-currents in Conducting Materials for Ndt Purposes

The numerical modeling of single frequency eddy-current phenomena based on the magnetic vector potential has been successfully applied to many NDT applications [1-3]. Despite the considerable wealth of sinusoidal eddy-current literature, the numerical modeling of pulsed eddy-currents has received little attention. Most of the recent finite element transient eddy-current NDT modeling [4,5] emplo...

QUALITY CONTROL OF PRECIPITATION HARDENED ALUMINIUM ALLOY PARTS VIA EDDY-CURRENT NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION

Precipitation hardening is the most common method in the strengthening of aluminium alloys. This method relies on the decrease of solid solubility with temperature reduction to produce fine precipitations which impede the movement of dislocations. The quality control of aluminium alloy specimens is an important concern of engineers. Among different methods, non-destructive techniques are the...

Equivalent Electromagnetic Constants for Microwave Application to Composite Materials for the Multi-Scale Problem

To connect different scale models in the multi-scale problem of microwave use, equivalent material constants were researched numerically by a three-dimensional electromagnetic field, taking into account eddy current and displacement current. A volume averaged method and a standing wave method were used to introduce the equivalent material constants; water particles and aluminum particles are us...
